PGA Tour Tips
Date: Jun 9–12, 2022
The Canadian Open returns for the first time since 2019, after both the events since in 2020 and 2021 were cancelled due to covid-19. St George’s Golf and Country Club in Toronto will play host to the Canadian Open for the sixth time overall and the first time since 2010 (all of the other previous events at St George’s date back over 50 years), meaning course history is largely irrelevant when analysing the golfers in the field this week.
St George’s is a shorter course (par 70 at 7,014 yards), with five par 3s, three par 5s, and bent-grass greens. It hasn’t had any major over halls since 2010, when Carl Pettersson won with a score of -14. He made the cut on the number but shot a 60 on Saturday to get into contention, and won by one stroke after 54-hole leader Dean Wilson blew a 4-stroke advantage. Pettersson’s 10-under 60 from that event is the course record.
Pettersson’s stats from 2010 show that he was not long off the tee, but was an exceptional putter (282.1 avg. driving distance, 3rd in SG putting for the 2010 season). Wilson was near identical in those categories (281.6 avg. driving distance, 4th in SG putting). For reference, the tour average driving distance was 287.3 back in 2010, so they were both solidly below average in that category. That profile should carry over to this event, and heavy hitters who haemorrhage strokes putting are unlikely to have a great time here. The par 5s are definitely reachable in two however, long hitters might have an easier time gaining eagle opportunities but if they manage to find the fairways and leave themselves with shorter approach shots this could hinder there chances.
Betting Talk:
5 of the top 10 players in the world currently are set to play (Scheffler, Smith, Thomas, McIlroy, Burns) But the odds are high as Scheffler, Thomas, and McIlroy all currently at worse than @10/1,
Dustin Johnson will not be playing, or representing RBC anymore, instead he’ll be playing at the LIV Golf Invitational Series which begins this week.
Betting Picks:
Scottie Scheffler @8/1
Rory McIlroy @10/1
Sam Burns @12/1
Most Bookmakers are paying 7 places so Back E/W
Our Long Shot:
Brendon Todd @ 66/1 seems like a very obvious play. Coming off a 3rd place finish at the Colonial
