The RSM Classic – GOLF
The RSM Classic is played at Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Georgia on 2 courses, the Plantation course, and the Seaside course. The Seaside Course measures out to around 7,000 yards and plays to a par 70. Seaside was designed with the Scottish Links in mind and the layout brings plenty of sand and water into play. There are quite a few holes that can punish players who let their drives get a little wild. This layout seems like it should favor those who can hit their spots off the tee and give themselves the best look at the greens. The Plantation Course measures out to about 7,050 yards and will play to a par 72. Looking at the layout for this course it seems like approach shot accuracy will reign supreme, especially if they tuck the pins back in some of these greens. It seems like this track offers risk-reward shots more-so than the Seaside layout. There are also a number of holes on this layout that afford players the chance to go for par 4 greens off the tee. Now, let’s take a look at some of the course horses and see if we can identify some key stats or styles of play to target here. Webb Simpson, Chris Kirk, Kevin Kisner, and Robert Streb are 4 guys who have enjoyed great success at this event over the years even going back to when it was the McGladrey Classic. Were noticing right off the bat that all these guys are fairly accurate off the tee, all have strong short games, and all are strong putters with the exception of Chris Kirk who is still above average. This seems to line up with my expectation after looking at the course layouts. We can expect the winning score to be in the neighbourhood of 19-20 under so players will need to get hot with the flat stick to compete.
Key Stats: Driving Accuracy, SG: Approach w/focus on 125-150 yards, SG: Putting w/focus on bermudagrass, Ball-striking, SG: Short Game.
Target Player Profile: Were going to be looking for guys that can hit their spots off the tee because there is a lot of sand and water in play on these courses. Were looking for guys who are deadly with wedges and short irons in their hands because we’re going to see a ton of approach shots coming in from 125-150 yds and 150-175 yds. looking at SG: Short Game mainly simply because it seems to correlate with success here. Lastly, SG: Putting, specifically on bermudagrass, is going to be very important this week.
Betting Picks:
Tony Finau @9/1
The only truly world class golfer in this field. If he plays like he did this week again he will win every tournament. Odds are sure to be disgustingly short (given how soft this field is) and there’s a decent chance he w/d after winning this week
Tom Hoge @28/1
Quietly having a great season so far with 4/5 finishes t13 or better, Hoge finished top 5 here last year and is both an accurate driver and a world class iron player. Love him outright and placement this week.
Denny McCarthy @33/1
Will be good at these tasty odds.
Seamus Power @8/1
Should be amongst the places, and at 20/1 worth a punt.
*Most firms paying 8 places*
