The Genesis Scottish Open is a co-sanctioned event between the PGA Tour and DP World Tour (who recently banned LIV players from their events). This will mark the 4th straight year the event will be held at The Renaissance Club, which is a par 71 that will play 7,293 yards. Each of the first 3 years this event has gone into a playoff so this may be a good time to take a shot on the “to go to playoff” bet. This is an absolutely beautiful course and it’s easy to see why this event comes back year after year. It is also a very scoreable course as long as the wind isn’t too crazy. Right now the forecast looks fairly mild, but it’s definitely something to keep an eye on as we saw a winning score around 20 under the 2 years where there was no wind while the winning score plummeted to 11 under the year the wind picked up.
Fantasy National does not have stats for this event, so I outsourced and use some strokes gained data from last year to identify key stats. Looking at the leaderboard from last year it looks as if the emphasis was on approach play and putting. Strokes Gained off the tee didn’t really seem to be prevalent and around the green varied pretty wildly from player to play on the leaderboard so it’s hard to see that as a correlation to success here. As far as off the tee I will probably look at driving accuracy as there is definitely opportunities to get into trouble if players hit wayward drives.
Looking at the scorecard we see there is 5 par 4s that fall between 450-500 yards and there are 3 par 3s that fall between 200-225 yards. There is plenty of chances to get into trouble on this course and players will card some bogeys and double bogeys. That’s why I’ll also be looking at birdies or better gained. I want guys who can rebound from the bogeys and who can take advantage of the par 5s and short par 4s. If the weather stays the way it’s predicted we’ll likely see another winning score around 20-21 under so we need guys that can get hot and reel off some birds.
