Preview:
Well, it was a relatively no sweat win as Scheffler dominated the field and held the lead from the end of round 2 all the way to his 4-putt double bogey on the final hole. Congrats to everyone who hit that Scheff outright! Now we head to Hilton Head where 5 of the world top 10 players are scheduled to make the short 2.5 hour trip. Harbour Town Golf Links is a par 71 that will play around 7,121 yards and features some classic Pete Dye design characteristics. It’s a Dye/Nicklaus design that forces players to take the right angles into these small green complexes to score.
Strokes Gained Approach and Strokes Gained Putting reign supreme here and it is ALL about giving yourself the right angles into these greens. These fairways are fairly easy to hit, and the greens are very small and difficult to hit. GIR% is way down here coming in almost 9% below tour average. Looking at the top performers here over the past 5 years we see very few bombers on this list and quite a few of the top iron players and putters. Driving distance is also 16 yards shorter here than the tour average so that tells us players know how important it is to hit their spots, so they dial it back off the tee.
Next, we’ll look at some specific distance stats to target. Nearly half of the approach shots we see will be from the 150-200 yard range, with the 175-200 yard range coming in well above tour average by 7%. 3 of the 4 par 3s also come in this range so 175-200 is definitely a range we want to focus on. Next, we see that there are 5 par 4s that fall in the 400-450 range including a few that are some of the easier scoring holes on this course. Weather can play a huge role here so it’s definitely worth checking the weather report as the event approaches. This is one of the courses where if the wind kicks up I would absolutely pivot to players who play well in those conditions.
Lastly, I’ll be looking at Bogey Avoidance and Sand Saves because as per usual Pete Dye has plenty of well-placed bunkers throughout this layout and there is lots of water to contend with. What I’ll be looking for here is course navigators who can stay out of trouble. Since this is a second shot golf course, I will place a premium on approach play, especially at those yardage ranges I talked about earlier.
