The women’s heptathlon event at the 2020 Summer Olympics is scheduled to take place on 4th and 5th August 2021 at the Japan National Stadium. 24 athletes are expected to compete.

Events

This is the women’s ultimate all-round test, a seven-event contest covering a range of events across a two-day programme.

The first day consists of (in order): 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200m. Day two comprises the long jump, javelin and 800m.

Competitors earn points for their performance in each discipline and the overall winner is the athlete who scores the most points

Heptathletes are allowed to commit one false start in the track events. A second false-start will lead to disqualification. In the shot, long jump and javelin each athlete is limited to three attempts.

Should athletes end the competition tied on points, then the athlete with the most points in the majority of the events wins. If the tie remains, the athlete with the most points in any one of the events is awarded the win.

A heptathlete requires speed, explosive strength, skill and agility.

Our Picks

Katarina Johnson-Thompson (GBR) @3/1 for Gold

She won the gold medal at the 2019 World Championships and broke the British record with a score of 6,981 points, which ranks her at No. 6 on the all-time heptathlon lists, and comes here as second favourite although we think she will go on to Olympic glory.

Nafissatou Thiam (BEL) @1/8 to Medal

As of February 2020, Thiam holds the Belgian record in women’s heptathlon, women’s javelin and women’s long jump. She set a new world record for the high jump discipline within a women’s heptathlon competition in 2019. She comes here as the bookies favourite to take gold but were seeing a silver as KJT will triumph in what should be a lose battle.

Kendell Williams (USA) @3/1 to Medal

There is a host of Athletes in with a chance of a Bronze but were backing Williams to take the 3rd place on the podium.  She represented her country at the 2016 World Indoor Championships finishing sixth. Her brother is fellow American track and field athlete Devon Williams, so with a competitive family we think she will come out as top ranked American.
