The Men’s 109 kg weightlifting competitions at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo will take place on 3rd August, at the Tokyo International Forum. The competition exists out of two rounds in which athletes try to lift as much weight as possible. In the snatch round, this lift needs to be done in one continuous motion, while the competitors are allowed to rest the barbell on the chest in the clean and jerk. The athlete with the highest combined weight lifted wins the event.
Our Picks:
Simon Martirosyan (ARM) @4/7 Fav
He held the youth world record for the snatch, the clean and jerk and total in the +94 kg division before weight classes were changed in 2018 nullifying earlier records. He is currently the world record holder in the Snatch, Clean & Jerk, and Total for the −109 kg division. He comes here as a huge favourite and it would take some amazing effort for anyone to beat him or some slip of form to see him lose.
Akbar Djuraev (UZB) @6/5
Uzbekistani weightlifter and Junior World Champion competing in the 105 kg category until 2018, and the 102 kg and 109 kg categories starting in 2018 after the International Weightlifting Federation reorganized the categories. He holds the junior world record in the snatch and total in the 102 kg division, as well as the snatch, clean & jerk and total in the 109 kg division, and is possibly the only man here looking like a serious challenger to Martirosyan even at just 21.
