Sha’Carri Richardson is an American track and field sprinter, who competes in the 100 meters and 200 meters. Richardson rose to fame in 2019 as a freshman at Louisiana State University, running 10.75 seconds to break the 100 m record at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Championships.
Yesterday, 1st July, it was unfortunately announced that up and coming track star Sha’Carri Richardson had failed the 2021 Olympics drug test which came back positive for traces of marijuana. Now while marijuana doesn’t have performance enhancing capabilities it is still considered an illegal drug according to 1970’s rules on doping.
Sha’Carri Richardson had stated that she only used marijuana to help cope due to her mothers recent passing. We here at Degen do not personally think she should have been banned as she wouldn’t of gained any advantage however she did know the policy about doping and we feel a stern warning would’ve been better for this athlete for her future career.
No doubt she will soon return to the track ready to beat many more world records, so while we wait we can only wish her solace and happiness in these difficult times.

Do you think this ban is fair or do you think this should be handled by the law as marijuana doesn’t enhance performance however is still illegal?
