Novak Djokovic vs Jack Draper, 1.30pm GMT
Draper is really talented and it’s great he got this chance, but this is likely to go very wrong for him. Let’s see that matchup in a couple of years but for now, maintaining his best level against Djokovic in the best of five format is just way too much of an ask.
Our Pick: Djokovic 3-1 @4/1
Marc Polmans vs Yen-Hsun Lu, 1pm GMT
Another step on Lu’s tour of collecting pay-checks around the world is Wimbledon and this time, the draw is very favourable. It’s almost tempting to pick the Taiwanese but can he really stop Polmans, who got through the qualifiers and is a regular pro, not a recreationally competing veteran? Lu is a former quarterfinalist, but I’m not convinced.
Our Pick: Polmans 3-0 @6/4
Andy Murray vs Nikoloz Basilashvili, 4pm GMT
A semi-finalist in Halle with a 19-17 record on the season and a solid grass court record, Basilashvili is plenty capable on the grass and should give Murray a difficult match. In limited match play since the start of 2020, Murray has basically broken even in his matches, having struggled against some of the better players on tour as he’s simply not the player he was, and may never again reach that level after all the injuries. The crowd will be behind Murray though and this venue is special for him, I have a hunch Murray can will himself to a first round win here, going further is a much different story.
Our Pick: Murray win @10/11
Mihaela Buzarnescu vs Venus Williams, 2pm GMT
A battle of to true veterans of the tour lies in store here. Venus Williams is marching towards the end of an incredible career with an unwavering love for the game and a competitive desire to win. If she can find the glimpses of great tennis she has shown in the last few months she should be able to make a decent run here.
Our Pick: Venus Williams win @8/11
Donna Vekic vs Anastasia Potapov, 1.30pm GMT
Vekic is playing her way back into form on the grass courts of Europe. The same can be said of Potopova, whose rise up the ranks was derailed by injuries. This one should be fun to watch and could go either way. I’m giving the edge to Vekic as she has more experience on the big stage, but don’t be surprised if Potopova proves me wrong.
Our Pick: Vekic win @8/13
